SoCal Prep Legends and the Southern California News Group has teamed up with KABC-7 to produce the 2017 SCPL Awards, which will take place on June 11, then air June 24 at 6:30 p.m. on KABC (channel 7).
In the weeks leading up to the show, SoCal Prep Legends will release the nominees for nine of the 11 categories including major awards like Male and Female Athlete of the Year.
Here are the nominees for Team of the Year:
- Bishop Montgomery, Boys Basketball
Bishop Montgomery went 31-2 this season, winning the CIF-Southern Section Open Division championship, the SoCal Regional crown and CIF State under the guidance of head coach Doug Mitchell. The Knights defeated No. 1 Sierra Canyon, No. 2 Chino Hills and No. 3 Mater Dei, twice, on its way to these amazing accomplishments.
- St. John Bosco, Football
The Braves’ 13-2 season was highlighted by a CIF-Southern Section Division 1 championship over Mater Dei 42-28, which was an avenging victory after losing to the Monarchs earlier in the year. A team riddled with future NCAA DI talent, St. John Bosco then capped its season with a CIF State Open Division crown in December by defeating Northern California’s De La Salle 56-33.
- Laguna Beach, Girls Water Polo
The Breakers went 33-1, which was the program’s second undefeated season in three years. Laguna Beach dominated the competition, outscoring opponents 497-106 while winning every match by at least four goals, including a CIF-SS Division 1 title 6-2 over San Marcos in February. Laguna Beach was a combined 9-0 against the next three best teams in its division (Mater Dei, San Marcos and Dos Pueblos) and outscored them by a score of 111-44.
- Great Oak, Girls Cross Country
The Great Oak girls cross country team continued to add to its trophy case, and the hardware seems to come in pairs of two. Great Oak won its fifth consecutive CIF-Southern Section D1 title and fifth consecutive State title this season. The team also finished in the Nike Cross Nationals’ top-3 for a third consecutive year.
- Roosevelt (Eastvale), Boys Basketball
Roosevelt won its first outright Big VIII League title, defeated rival Centennial (Corona) five times including in the SoCal Regional DI final, and won the CIF State DI title. The Mustangs are only the second Riverside County team to win a boys basketball state championship and first since Riverside King in 2002.
