NORTHRIDGE >> In New York, Hunter Greene sat with his family at the MLB Network studios, waiting to see where he’d be taken in the MLB Draft Monday
His Notre Dame teammates back home sat ready with their phones. All eyes on the 17-year-old pitcher/shortstop just like their baseball games.
The No. 1 pick was announced and JSerra’s Royce Lewis was selected by the Minnesota Twins. Greene’s teammates groaned but minutes later, their mood changed thanks to 15 words from MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred.
“With the second selection of the 2017 MLB Draft, the Cincinnati Reds select….Hunter Greene,”
Greene, the first African-American high school baseball player to make the cover of Sports Illustrated, hugged his parents, coach Tom Dill and younger siblings Libriti and Ethan. His teammates cheered and roared in approval.
