JSerra girls topple Santa Margarita in penalty kicks, advance to SoCal regional final

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO – It was perhaps the most appropriate finish to a series of classic showdowns between Orange County’s reigning girls soccer powers, but the better team Thursday afternoon wasn’t celebrating at the end.

Santa Margarita gave one of its finest performances this season in the CIF Southern California Regional semifinal, but JSerra will get to defend its Division I championship on Saturday after toppling the visiting Eagles on penalty kicks following a bristling 1-1 draw.

The Lions (20-1-5) made all four of their shots in the tiebreaker, and goalkeeper Ryan Campbell watched one Santa Margarita attempt clear the crossbar and went to the ground to save another, setting up a title-game clash at home with Upland (21-1-3).
