IRVINE – They weren’t anchored like in the past by a 6-foot-9 goalie earmarked for the Olympic team. They didn’t feature like in the past an attacker compared to Tony Azevedo. Yet Mater Dei’s boys water polo players showed Saturday night that they had the qualities to return to the pinnacle in the CIF-Southern Section.

The top-seeded Monarchs followed their proven recipe for success of team defense, balanced scoring and championship experience to recapture the Division 1 crown with a convincing 13-9 victory against No. 3 seed Oaks Christian of Westlake Village in front of an overflow crowd at Woollett Aquatics Center.
