MISSION VIEJO – One legendary career ended while another quarterback-led story continued to captivate Friday in the CIF-SS Division 1 football semifinals.

Quarterback JT Daniels broke a spectacular touchdown run and his team’s defense delivered a strong effort as top-ranked Mater Dei defeated No. 2 Mission Viejo 49-21 in the final game for retiring Diablos coach Bob Johnson.

Before an overflow crowd of just over 7,000 at Mission Viejo High, the Monarchs (13-0) led the clash of undefeated teams 35-7 at intermission and invoked the running clock in the fourth quarter to sprint into the Division 1 final Dec. 2 at Cerritos College against rival St. John Bosco. The Braves beat Centennial of Corona, 62-34.
