Paramount, Downey soccer teams share inclusive spirit in season finale

DOWNEY >> The last high school boys soccer match of the regular season between Paramount and Downey started three times: Once for Edwin Chavez, once for Anthony Yanez and once for the San Gabriel Valley League championship.

Paramount ended up winning its fourth consecutive league title on a last-minute goal, but perhaps the most exciting and rewarding moment of the day came before the official clock even started.

Downey coach Marvin Mires and Paramount coach Rafa Villasenor are both special education teachers on their respective campuses and have special needs students on their teams.

“We thought it would be a great idea for the last league game to get them into the game, have them score a goal and celebrate it together,” Villasenor said…
