Hundreds of past and present South Bay baseball players gathered Wednesday to mourn the death of a star 16-year-old South High School shortstop killed the night before when two cars involved in an earlier collision ran a red light and crashed into the van his father was driving in Torrance.

Police arrested one of the drivers on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and were seeking the identity of the second, who sped away before abandoning his car and running.

The Tuesday night crash at Crenshaw Boulevard and Crest Road killed Jesse Esphorst Jr., and seriously injured his father, Jesse Esphorst Sr., 47, who was driving his son home from dinner at his grandmother’s nearby residence. Jesse’s father was placed in intensive care…
