MORENO VALLEY — Rancho Verde football coach Jeff Steinberg knew he had a strong leader on the field in senior center Gage Witte. What really opened Steinberg’s eyes, however, was how far Witte has taken that leadership role off the field throughout this season.

The Mustangs’ offensive linemen gather at Witte’s house every Wednesday after practice, and Witte often hosts other teammates at his house on the weekends. Steinberg said the bonds forged at these weekly get-togethers have been crucial to the the team’s success.

“This is not just a team, it’s a brotherhood,” said Witte, one of the team’s captains.
