SACRAMENTO >> It took less than four minutes for Eastvale Roosevelt head coach Stephen Singleton to ditch his blue suit jacket. It took him nearly all night to crack a smile.
But when he finally did, in the last 45 seconds of Roosevelt’s 54-45 win over Union City James Logan in the CIF State Division I championship on Friday, there was no wiping the smile off the head coach’s face.
“I’m still on cloud nine,” Singleton said standing on the court in Sacramento’s Golden 1 Center after the win.
It was a block from senior Matt Mitchell that finally brought the stoic Singleton’s guard down. The Cal State Fullerton-bound Mitchell pinned a layup against the backboard, maintaining Roosevelt’s nine-point lead with 32 seconds left. Singleton shared fist bumps with his assistant coaches. Roosevelt parents roared in the stands, sensing the school’s first ever state title.
