Unexpected opportunities and life-changing injuries have contributed to making St. John Bosco defensive lineman Sal Spina one of the best in California. The 6-foot-2, 268-pound senior is back and fully healthy this week as Bosco prepares to face rival Mater Dei on Friday.
What has happened to Spina makes it hard to believe he was a multi-sport athlete and student body president with only one year of tackle football experience as a tight end before coming to Bosco.
“Not many kids could do what Sal has done,” Bosco coach Jason Negro said. “He’s the ideal student-athlete.”
