SCPL Football Pick'em

SCPL Football Pick’em – Week 3

Football-Pick'em NEW

Petros is proving himself to be a serious contender after going 7-0 in Week 3! Fred Robledo and Eric-Paul Johnson also had perfect weeks, while all other experts went 5-2.

Johnson has separated himself from the pack with his big week, now with 25 wins. Tarek Fattal was too ambitious in picking Newbury Park over Valencia, and his set himself behind with just 21 wins and in last place.

Steve Fryer, Mike Guardabascio, Evan Barnes, Robledo and Petros Papadakis are all within a game of each other in the middle of the pack. A lot of football left!

Checkout last week’s picks, expert records and more below.

Each week select prep staff of the Southern California News Group will attempt to predict the outcome of SoCal’s best high school football games, which span across the Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties.

You may notice that one “expert” isn’t a staff reporter, but a recognizable face and voice in the SoCal sports community, FOX Sports’ Petros Papadakis. The former Trojan football player and current co-host of AM 570’s Petros & Money Show will be SCPL’s guest picker for the 2017 season. Be sure to tune into AM 570 from 2-6 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays to hear Petros make his selections, and speak  about SCPL’s best football games.

Steve Fryer, OCSteve Fryer’s Picks:
OC Register, @Steve Fryer
Pick Record: 18-3

-Mater Dei vs. Bergen Catholic (NJ): Mater Dei
My agent confirms that, yes, it is in my contract to pick Trinity League schools.

-LB Poly vs. Mission Viejo: LB Poly
I went back and forth on this one and decided to pick Long Beach Poly I think the MV coaches will figure out some stuff to exploit..But Poly’s team speed is worrisome.
-Narbonne vs. Corona Centennial: Centennial
QB Tanner McKee expected to be green-light-go

-Valencia vs. Newbury Park: Valencia of Magic Mountain
Because they are higher ranked in the CalHiSports.com poll and I trust those CalHiSports.com guys, pretty much

-Murrieta Valley vs. San Clemente: San Clemente
Tritons are tough to beat at their home field, Thalassa Stadium and its excellent Pom Pom Cafe.

-St. Francis vs. La Serna: St. Francis
For reasons I dare not reveal to my competition.
-El Segundo vs. Mira Costa: Mira Costa
One of the better 0-2 teams around.

Tarek Fattal, DNTarek Fattal’s Picks:
SCPL/LA Daily News, @Tarek_Fattal
Pick Record: 16-5

-Mater Dei vs. Bergen Catholic (NJ): Mater Dei
Best in country until proven otherwise
-LB Poly vs. Mission Viejo: LB Poly
Give me the tough-nosed defense and Matt Corral.
-Narbonne vs. Corona Centennial: Centennial
Would like to see Narbonne win, but Centennial is outmatch the Gauchos in many other facets of the game. Big Jalen Chatman fan, but he won’t be enough.
-Valencia vs. Newbury Park: Newbury Park
My heart is torn on this one. Valencia is favored, undoubtedly. But Newbury Park just came off a tough loss to Westlake. Panthers are fired up, defense will tighten up, Rising has another big game.
-Murrieta Valley vs. San Clemente: San Clemente
High scoring affair
-St. Francis vs. La Serna: St. Francis
Freshman football head coach Kyle Strazzeri is my guy in La Canada – I don’t want to tarnish our friendship.
-El Segundo vs. Mira Costa: El Segundo
Mira Costa is not the 0-2 team most see on paper. But I’ll take last week’s SCPL boys athlete of the week, Danny McEntee with another big game for El Segundo.

Petros Papadakis, AM570:Fox Sports

Petros Papadakis’ Picks:
Fox Sports, @theOldP
Pick Record: 15-6

-Mater Dei vs. Bergen Catholic (NJ): Mater Dei
The Jersey Boys are just an appetizer for the Monarchs as they look ahead to Bosco on October 13th.
-LB Poly vs. Mission Viejo: Mission Viejo
These Jackrabbits don’t resemble the Poly teams of Jaso or Lara.
-Narbonne vs. Corona Centennial: Centennial
My heart says Narbonne, but my brain says the Football Factory aka Centennial.
-Valencia vs. Newbury Park: Valencia
The Panthers are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the school Friday night. But Vikings will ruin the party. Ps. I can’t believe Wayne Cook will miss this reunion to be in Memphis with Ucla.
-Murrieta Valley vs. San Clemente: San Clemente
One Town, One Team
-St. Francis vs. La Serna: St. Francis
La Serna is the best under cover program in SoCal this decade … But St Francis coach Jimmy Bonds has one of his  best teams.
-El Segundo vs. Mira Costa: El Segundo
Can’t believe I’m doing this. But the Mustangs are 0-2 & the Eagles are scoring 35 points per game.

Fred Robledo, SGVT

Fred Robledo’s Picks:
Tribune/Star-News, @SGVNSports
Pick Record: 16-5

-Mater Dei vs. Bergen Catholic (NJ): Mater Dei
Let’s establish this now, I’m picking Mater Dei no matter who it plays.
-LB Poly vs. Mission Viejo: Mission Viejo
As good as Long Beach Poly is, Rabbits are slightly overrated.
-Narbonne vs. Corona Centennial: Centennial
Don’t expect a blowout, but don’t expect it to be close either.
-Valencia vs. Newbury Park: Valencia
There are times I agree with Steve Fryer. This is one of them.
-Murrieta Valley vs. San Clemente: San Clemente
But the over/under is 70 points, and I’m taking the over.
-St. Francis vs. La Serna: St. Francis
Bank it, I’m undefeated picking in my little corner of the world.
-El Segundo vs. Mira Costa: El Segundo
Because Mira Costa lost to the teams above, St. Francis and La Serna.

Mike Guardabascio, Press-Telegram

Mike Guardabascio’s Picks:
Press-Telegram, @Guardabascio
Pick Record: 18-3

-Mater Dei vs. Bergen Catholic (NJ): Mater Dei
Nobody’s going to pick against them until they lose a game.
-LB Poly vs. Mission Viejo: LB Poly
Should be a fun game, I’ll be the deciding vote in Poly’s favor
-Narbonne vs. Corona Centennial: Centennial
As long as McKee is playing, I think they’ll win comfortably
-Valencia vs. Newbury Park:
Valencia
-Murrieta Valley vs. San Clemente: San Clemente
“We’re alllllll on the Tritons.” –Chris Berman
-St. Francis vs. La Serna: St. Francis
St. Francis in an easy pick.
-El Segundo vs. Mira Costa: Mira Costa
The Mustangs bounce back and pick up their first win

NO RESALES

Evan Barnes’ Pick:
LA Daily News, @Evan_b
Pick Record: 17-4

-Mater Dei vs. Bergen Catholic (NJ): Mater Dei
Stays unbeaten.

-LB Poly vs. Mission Viejo: LB Poly
Had two weeks off. Let’s see if being fresh proves me right

-Narbonne vs. Corona Centennial: Centennial
This isn’t 2012 when Narbonne nearly upset the Huskies. If McKee is healthy, Centennial wins big

-Valencia vs. Newbury Park: Valencia
Newbury Park’s defense looks suspect after losing to Westlake. Not the case for Valencia.

-Murrieta Valley vs. San Clemente:
San Clemente
-St. Francis vs. La Serna: St. Francis
Good luck to most teams stopping Darius Perrantes
-El Segundo vs. Mira Costa: Mira Costa
Never bet against Don Morrow and his battle tested team gets its first W
