Historically, the Van Nuys High boys basketball team hasn’t generated a lot of buzz, but the past two years Tyree Winborn has created enough by himself to compensate for it.

“When was the last time you heard about Van Nuys?” Wolves basketball coach Evan Porter said. “Never.”

The senior point guard is the bonafide leader of the Van Nuys boys basketball team, which won a L.A. City Section Division III title last year as Winborn scored 41 points in the title game against Sotomayor. This season, Winborn has is set on helping the Wolves win the Division II title, and in the process he’s been turning heads with 40- and 50-point performances.

Winborn isn’t the biggest player — he’s just 5-foot-10, or so he says.

“I love when people ask me about my height. Most think I’m 5-foot-8 or 5-foot-9, but I’m 5-foot-10,” Winborn said with a smile, adding, “On a good day.”
