CARSON >> With its lead trimmed to one point midway through the third quarter, the Westchester boys basketball team took advantage of a Fairfax timeout in Saturday night’s L.A. City Section Open Division championship game.

“We expected (Fairfax) to come out in the third ready to battle,” Westchester’s Jeremiah Turley said. “We knew we had to calm our guys down, run our sets and get the best shots.”

Kaelan Allen scored five straight points before Kevin Bethel’s jumper opened up a six-point lead, and Westchester pulled away in the fourth quarter to earn its second City Section crown in three years with a 63-53 victory at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
