LAKEWOOD – Lakewood’s boys volleyball team had been rolling through the Moore League, sweeping all nine foes it had faced heading into its “senior night” showdown with defending champion Wilson and a chance to clinch a share of the league crown its rivals have already conceded.

The Lancers put the celebration on hold Thursday and took a lesson that Coach Devon Taylor hopes will serve them well once the CIF-Southern Section playoffs begin next month.

Wilson absorbed a one-sided loss in the first set, pulled out two tight sets before dropping another, then held on in the finale for a stunning five-set victory – 13-25, 30-28, 25-23, 23-25, 15-13 – over the No. 1 team in Division 2, a result the Bruins hope can propel them to something good come postseason.
